Virtual Server Hosting

Available to

  • All active Sheridan employees

Virtualization refers to the act of creating a virtual (rather than actual) version of something, including virtual computer hardware resources.  A virtual server runs its own operating system, and is indistinguishable from a traditional physical server. Each of these isolated virtual servers believes that it is a separate physical computer and behaves accordingly.

Each virtual server can run its own operating system (Windows or Linux), is assigned its own hostname and IP address, and may be independently administered, configured, and rebooted without affecting the other virtual servers. Centrally provisioned virtual servers offer flexibility, convenience, rapid deployment, economy, and high reliability and availability. They support sustainability initiatives by optimizing resource utilization and reducing energy consumption.

Features & Benefits:

  • Built-in high availability/fault tolerance;
  • Management flexibility, easier maintenance;
  • Faster provisioning than physical servers (which need to be ordered, received, and installed into a datacenter);
  • Flexible resource allocation (memory, CPU, disk); and,
  • Improved efficiency and cost-effectiveness over traditional physical servers.

Available Options

There is a departmental cost transfer required to provision a virtual server. The following are standard configurations and prices; however, alterations can be accommodated if needed (with corresponding changes to pricing):

Operating System CPUs Memory Disk Space Cost
Microsoft Windows Server 2019 1 4 GB 50 GB $350/year.
Microsoft Windows Server 2016 1 4 GB 50 GB $350/year.
Ubuntu Linux LTS 1 512 MB 10 GB $50/year.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 1 1 GB 12 GB $200/year.
