2018-19 Laptop Specifications

Below are the laptop specifications for students in Sheridan's Mobile Computing programs for the 2018-19 academic year. To see which programs require the laptop models listed below, please see the Laptop and Program Requirements page.

  • Laptop specifications are only valid for one academic year (September through to the end of August). After the current academic year you may be required to upgrade or purchase another laptop.

  • Windows 7 Home Basic is not supported. You will be unable to download licensed software from AccessSheridan from a laptop running "Home Basic" versions of Windows 7. Windows 7 – Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate – is recommended.

  • Windows Operating Systems are available to Sheridan students from OnTheHub.

You get direct access to software and hardware support from Sheridan's Mac Technologists along with direct access to Sheridan's own Apple Service Repair Centre, allowing you to have your laptop serviced without leaving the College.

  • Students can purchase online from the Sheridan Apple Store or from any Apple Store at Education pricing provided they show a valid student number. Apple's Back to School Promotions usually begin mid to late summer. We recommend waiting to purchase during the promotion period.

  • Software Provided: All programs get Microsoft Office & Adobe Software. BFTV, Journalism & Journalism New Media also get Avid Media Composer. Additionally, BFTV students get Pro Tools on a sign-out basis.

IMPORTANT

  • Purchase of the AppleCare Protection Plan is recommended for all Apple laptop purchases.   • Students in Bachelor of Applied Computer Science must partition their laptop with BootCamp to run both MacOS and a supported version of Windows 10 (Pro or Education) natively on the laptop hardware. Additional OS installs may be required for particular courses. For MacOS, please install the latest stable version of MacOS and Xcode.

  • Design/Decorating requires the use of a laptop in the first year only. Students can bring either a Windows-based Performance Model or an Apple Performance Model. However, if you plan to use a MacBook Pro you must be running Apple's OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) or higher and the Boot Camp utility. Boot camp will allow you to run Windows as well as Apple's OS X. You will need to have installed your own copy of Windows 7 (Pro, Premium or Ultimate), Windows 8.1 (all editions EXCEPT Windows 8.1 RT) or Windows 10 via Boot camp for your laptop to meet requirements. If you are using VMware Fusion or Parallels to run Windows on your Mac, the IT Service Desk cannot provide software/technical support. More information can be found on the Boot Camp page .
  • Software Provided: Windows 10 as well as additional software such as Microsoft Office (for Windows and Mac), Visual Studio, Adobe Creative Cloud are available for free to qualifying students from OnTheHub. Avid Media Composer and Pro Tools will be provided to Media Arts students. Bachelor of Film/TV students also get Pro Tools on a sign-out basis.
