2021/2022 Computing Requirements for Laptop Learning Programs

[updated September 28, 2021] Below are the laptop specifications for students in Sheridan's Laptop Learning programs for the 2021/2022 academic year. To see which programs require the laptop models listed below, please see the Laptop and Program Requirements page.

Please note:

Given that many classes are taking place remotely as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, your laptop should have a webcam and audio input/output capabilities. A quality headset/microphone is also recommended.

  • A minimum CPU base speed of 2.5 GHz is strongly recommended

Important Info About Apple's New Silicon Processors (aka the 'M1');
Potential Issues with macOS 11 (Big Sur)

Although Mac computers with Apple silicon offer substantial performance benefits, they are not currently compatible with all software titles that may be required for your course work – likewise for the latest macOS, Big Sur. Learn more about potential software compatibility issues.

  • Purchase of the AppleCare Protection Plan is recommended for all Apple laptop purchases. You get direct access to software and hardware support from Sheridan's Mac Technologists along with direct access to Sheridan's own Apple Service Repair Centre, allowing you to have your laptop serviced without leaving the College.
  • Students can purchase online from the Sheridan Apple Store or from any Apple Store at Education pricing provided they show a valid student number. Apple's Back to School Promotions usually begin mid to late summer. We recommend waiting to purchase during the promotion period.
  • Software Provided: All programs get subscriptions to Microsoft Office & Adobe Software.

  • Architectural Technicia/Technology program students must use an Intel-based Mac laptop and partition their computer with Boot Camp to run both macOS and a supported 64-bit version of Windows 10 (Pro or Education) natively. Using virtualization software such as VMware Fusion or Parallels to run Windows on your Mac is neither encouraged or supported.
  • Honours Bachelor of Computer Science Mobile Computing students must use an Intel-based Mac laptop and partition their computer with Boot Camp to run both macOS and a supported version of Windows 10 (Pro or Education) natively. Additional OS installs may be required for particular courses. For macOS, please install the latest stable version of macOS and Xcode.
  • Interior Design/Decorating requires the use of a laptop in the first year only. If you plan to use a MacBook Pro you must use an Intel-based Mac laptop and partition your computer with Boot Camp to run both macOS and a supported version of Windows 10 (Pro or Education) natively. Using virtualization software such as VMware Fusion or Parallels to run Windows on your Mac is neither encouraged or supported.
  • Journalism students are able to use Macs with Apple Silicon processors (like the M1) as their courses will use Adobe Premiere Pro but should still follow the above requirements for RAM and hard drive capacity.
  • Journalism students also require a cell phone which should be a near-current to current model (3 years old or newer) and have the capabilities to record audio and video and:
    • be able to upload the video to your computer and for the computer to be able to edit the video in Adobe Premiere Pro
    • an external microphone that is compatible with your phone
  • Software Provided: All programs get subscriptions to Microsoft Office & Adobe Software. Bachelor of Film & Television students also get Avid Media Composer and access to Pro Tools on a sign-out basis.
