Email – Turning on Full Headers

Most email programs show standard information in the header of each email message. In order to troubleshoot email problems it is often desirable to see the full header information. Below is an explanation for several popular email clients on how to view the full headers in a message.

Outlook Web App (OWA)

  1. Log into the full version of OWA (not the light version)
  2. Open a message
  3. Click the Message Details button
  4. In the Message Details dialogue box, the headers appear in the Internet Mail Headers box.

Outlook 2013 (Windows)

  1. Open a message
  2. Select the File tab then click the Properties button under Info
  3. The headers appear in the Internet headers box.

Outlook 2016 (Mac OS X)

  1. Select a message from your Inbox or other folder.
  2. RIght click (or control click) on the message and select View Source
  3. The message will open in your default text editor revealing the full source code of the message, including header details.
    Right-click on the message and select View Source The message will open in your default text editor with full header details.

Mail (Mac OS X)

  1. Open the message you wish to view the headers for.
  2. Go to the View menu.
  3. Select Message and select on Long Headers.
  4. To turn off the headers: follow step 1-3, then click Default Headers.
